The Importance of Supporting Your Immune System When You're Sick

I didn't expect to get the flu. And I certainly didn't expect to be without my usual immune protocol when I did.

But that's exactly what happened and what followed was a timely reminder of why I put so much emphasis on nutritional support when the body is under stress. Before anyone asksyes, Nutritionists get sick too! We're human. This time, though, there was one big difference.

I wasn't home.

Normally, the first sign of a scratchy throat has me reaching for my "immune stack"the supplements and herbs I always keep on hand to support my body when it's under the weather. But this time? Nothing. No carefully organised supplement drawer. No herbal throat remedies. No Probiotics. No Zinc. No Vitamin C.

Just me... and the flu.

The interesting part wasn't that I got sick. Viruses happen. Even the healthiest immune systems are designed to respond to infections. What surprised me wasn't that I got the flu... it was how long it decided to hang around.

My husband jokingly calls me "the flu whisperer." Because when I feel that first scratchy throat or sniffle creeping in, I jump straight onto my immune protocol. Usually, I'm feeling so much better within about 24 hours and back to my normal self before the flu has had much chance to settle in.

This time was different.

Without my usual immune stack, that annoying little throat tickle lingered. The cough overstayed its welcome. I felt just a little "fluey" for days longer than I normally would, and it was a reminder of just how much I value giving my body the nutritional support it needs when I'm unwell.

As a Nutritionist, I think of immune health a bit like building a team. Your immune system does the hard work, but like any good team, it needs the right nutritional support to perform at its best.

My usual immune support protocol is simple but effective. It includes:

  • Vitamin C: An antioxidant that supports immune function and helps protect cells from oxidative stress, particularly when the body is under increased stress.
  • Zinc: An essential mineral and key player in immune health. Zinc is involved in many aspects of immune function, including the body's response to infection.
  • Probiotics: Your gut and immune system are closely connected, with a large proportion of immune activity associated with the gastrointestinal tract. Supporting a healthy gut microbiome is therefore an important part of my immune strategy - not just when I'm sick, but all year round.
  • Herbal throat support: When that scratchy throat appears, soothing herbs are my go-to. There are some wonderful herbs that can help soothe irritated tissues while also providing antimicrobial support.
  • Limit refined sugar and focus on real whole foods: Refined sugar isn't something I rely on anyway, but when I'm sick, I'm even more conscious of choosing foods that nourish. A stew in the slow cooker, colourful vegetables, nourishing broths and plenty of pure water provide the nutrients and nourishment the body needs to support a healthy immune response.

Could I prove that my lingering cough was simply because I didn't have my usual protocol?

Of course not.

But, after years of working with clients (and plenty of personal experience), I know I feel noticeably different when I support my body with the right nutrients compared with when I simply "wait it out."

And that's really the point.

Supporting your immune system isn't about trying to avoid every bug that comes your way. It's about building a resilient body that can mount an appropriate immune response, fight infection and support a healthy recovery.

Needless to say, as soon as I got home, my supplement drawer received a very warm welcome!

The lesson learned?

I'll probably still forget my phone charger from time to time...

But my immune toolkit is officially making the packing list.
